Archetypes

The characters in any allegorical story are often used to symbolise certain concepts. These may be types of people (stereotypes); a group or organisation; a part of the mind; a power or force; etc.
 
Below are a list of the main characters in the film and what they symbolise.

Persephone

In Greek mythology, Persephone was the wife of Hades, lord of the underworld. Although Hades is considered the god of wealth, because wealth, in the form of crops, comes from below the earth, it is Persephone, the goddess of vegetation that causes them to grow.

In the Matrix, the Merovingian thinks he is in control of the wealth, but Persephone has equal access to the Keymaker.
