Archetypes

The characters in any allegorical story are often used to symbolise certain concepts. These may be types of people (stereotypes); a group or organisation; a part of the mind; a power or force; etc.
 
Below are a list of the main characters in the film and what they symbolise.

Morpheus

The cool, calm and collected Morpheus. Experienced, capable and commanding of respect.

A leader, though not through force or status, but through respect. Someone who recognises and believes in the abilities of those under his command.

Morpheus is the father figure in the Holy Trinity.

This trinity: Neo, the masculine mind; Trinity the feminine mind and Morpheus, the higher self, the product of the cooperation between the masculine and feminine.
